Understanding Indiana’s Waiver Program
Empowering Hoosiers with Disabilities to Live Their Best Lives
Indiana’s waiver programs provide vital support to individuals with disabilities, helping them live safely, independently, and meaningfully in their own homes or communities — rather than in institutional settings. These Medicaid-funded waivers “waive” certain federal requirements to make tailored services more accessible where they’re needed most.
What is a Medicaid Waiver?
A Medicaid waiver allows the state to use federal funding to offer services outside of traditional medical facilities. For individuals with developmental disabilities, mental health needs, or aging-related challenges, this means access to care in home- and community-based settings.
